Works notice – Clyde Road, Berwick road and rail closure, January and February

The Victorian Government is removing 22 dangerous level crossings, including the one at Clyde Road, Berwick as part of a $15 billion investment to upgrade the Pakenham line that will make it level crossing-free by 2025.

Work will be conducted around the clock from 12am Monday 10 January 2022 to 11.59pm Sunday 20 February 2022 during a closure of Clyde Road and the Pakenham line. During this time the level crossing and boom gates will be removed, a new rail bridge, signalling equipment and track will be installed, a new road underpass will be dug out, the new road surface will be created and shared use paths will be built.

What to expect

  • Closure of Clyde Road in both directions and some local streets.
  • Reduced speed limits and increased travel times around the area.
  • Increased heavy vehicle activity, construction traffic and construction workers moving through the area.
  • Noise, dust, lighting and vibration from construction works.
  • Changes to travel on public transport.
  • Vehicle, pedestrian and cyclists detours.

Works will take place 24 hours a day within the rail corridor and along Clyde Road during these times. We’ll notify impacted residents and businesses directly and minimise impacts where possible.

Traffic changes

  • Clyde Road will be closed in both directions between the level crossing and the Langmore Lane/Mansfield Street intersection from 12am Monday 10 January 2022 to 11.59pm Sunday 20 February 2022. Detour via Princes Highway/Freeway (M1) interchange or Princes Highway/Beaconsfield interchange. See detour map on page 3.
  • Reserve Street will be closed at Clyde Road, detour via Langmore Lane, Gloucester Avenue and Reserve Street. Local access for most residential properties and Little By Little Café will be maintained via the detour route.
  • Jane Street will be closed between Clyde Road and Evan Street. Detour via Mansfield Street and Evan Street. Local access only for residential properties and businesses maintained via the detour route.
  • Enterprise Avenue will remain open at all times, under changed traffic conditions.
  • Berwick Station southern car park remains closed to vehicles until early 2022.

Traffic controllers will be in place to help motorists move safely through the area. Allow extra travel time and expect delays.
